Steamboat police going to black and whites

— The Steamboat Springs Police Department is planning a new look for its fleet of police cruisers in an effort to make them more recognizable.

Police Chief Cory Christensen said he doesn’t think the current white cars with blue lettering are visible enough, especially when it's snowing.

"It really came to me as I was driving around town and couldn't point out my own police cars," Christensen said.

Going forward, the cars will be iconic black-and-white.

"Any visitor knows when they see a black-and-white car, they know it's a police car," Christensen said. "I want them to be highly, highly visible."

The new paint scheme will be rolled out as cars are replaced, meaning there will be no additional costs.

"It's rolled into the replacement cost of the vehicle," Christensen said.

This year, two cars are being replaced. It will take about four years to replace the entire fleet.
