Steamboat mountain bikers endure race in Cortez

Steamboat Springs — A strong contingent of Steamboat Springs riders raced well Saturday in the 12 hours of Mesa Verde, an endurance mountain bike race in Cortez.
Bec Bale was sixth in the women's solo division, finishing six laps on the 16.4-mile course, a collection of trails that mostly was singletrack and, Bale said, a ton of fun.
"It was fast and flowy. … The final descent, called Rib Cage and Here 4 More, was ridiculously fun, screaming fast jumps," she said.
Bale said she spent the day surging and falling between fourth and seventh places but didn't plan her meals right and felt drained on the final lap.
Mike Sharkey was ninth on the men's solo side, finishing seven laps.
Karen Tremaine was second in the women's singlespeed category, her second strong finish early this summer, while Clint Ball was 11th in the men's singlespeed event, finishing seven laps.
JP Pougiales, meanwhile, was fifth in the solo "geezer" category, getting in five laps.
