Steamboat Springs — A 39-year-old Steamboat Springs man was arrested Monday on suspicion of jumping a 65-year-old man and hitting him with a bike lock cable.
According to an affidavit filed in Routt County Court, the altercation happened at about 11 p.m. Sunday in the 700 block of Walton Pond Circle. Jerome Patrick Montano was arrested shortly after noon Monday on suspicion of second-degree assault.
According to the affidavit, a police officer was in the area on another call Sunday night when the officer heard yelling, screaming and what sounded like a fight. Police discovered an older man who was bleeding from his head on the sidewalk, and the man told police that he had been hit with a tire chain by Montano.
According to the affidavit, police talked with witnesses who said that Montano and the other man had a heated argument earlier in the evening and that Montano returned and confronted the man a second time. The man thought Montano had left, and he went outside to smoke a cigarette when he was struck by Montano, who had been "hiding in the shadows," the affidavit states.
According to the affidavit, Montano continued to punch and kick the man until Montano was pulled off by witnesses.
The man was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center and was treated for a fractured thumb.
