Steamboat man, 19, arrested on suspicion of sexual assault
January 31, 2012
Steamboat Springs — A 19-year-old Steamboat Springs man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault after police say he had sex with a 14-year-old who was his girlfriend at the time.
According to an arrest warrant filed in Routt County Court, the girl told police the sex was consensual. But according to Colorado law, a sexual assault occurs when a "victim is less than 15 years of age and the actor is at least four years older than the victim and is not the spouse of the victim."
The Steamboat Pilot & Today does not typically identify those accused of sex crimes until they have been convicted.
