— The Steamboat Springs American Legion team opened up the district tournament Friday in Grand Junction with an 11-5 win against Palisade No. 2.

Steamboat next plays at 1 p.m. Saturday against top seeded Palisade No. 1.

"We're in good shape," Steamboat manager Dave Roy said.

Steamboat went up 4-0 through two innings, the biggest blow coming on a Johnny Stensvad two-run home run.

Palisade cut it to 5-2 in the fourth and tied it at 5-all in the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, Steamboat pushed three more across thanks to RBIs from Ryan Jeep, Connor Jennings and Billy Clark.

Steamboat added two more in the seventh on a Stensvad two-run double.

Jeep threw five effective innings, giving up five hits and five runs. Jesse Pugh got the save, going two innings and allowing just one base runner.

"It was a great feeling," Roy said. "We made only one error and got timely hitting and solid pitching."
The win puts Steamboat in a good position to make the state tournament. The top three teams from the district tournament advance.
