Steamboat juniors team falls, 1-0, to Westminster at state

Luke Graham

— The Steamboat Springs junior team found itself in a pitchers duel Sunday in the state championship tournament.

Unfortunately, Steamboat couldn’t push any runs across and lost, 1-0, to Westminster.

Steamboat had an opportunity to take the lead, but a blown call by the umpires thwarted a scoring chance for the team.

“One play wasn’t going to make it or break it for us,” Steamboat coach John Regan said. “We had runners on every inning, and we just couldn’t get anything across.”

Westminster scratched out its lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning, the only blemish on Steamboat pitcher Matthew Regan’s day.

Regan threw a complete game, allowing only two hits and striking out six.

“We were proud of them for what they did,” John Regan said. “When it gets down to four teams to go to state, win or lose, you have to hang your head high.”
