Steamboat hoops teams win at Eagle Valley

Luke Graham

— The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team remained hot Friday, mopping up Eagle Valley, 49-32.

Steamboat, now 12-4 overall and 7-1 in the Western Slope League, got a complete effort in its second showdown with Eagle Valley.

The Devils packed their defense in, focusing on Sailors forward Colleen King. Steamboat trailed, 11-7, after one quarter before finally hitting a run.

“Defensively, they started in a sagging D just trying to shut down Colleen,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “It took us a while to adjust.”

The Sailors outscored the Devils, 20-7, in the second quarter to take a 27-18 lead at halftime.

A big key, Ameen said, was the play of his guards, most notably Tara Spitellie. Spitellie scored a game-high 19 points, including six 3-pointers.

“We’re really playing well at a critical juncture of the season,” Ameen said.

Hannah Moore helped with 10 points, and King had 8 points and 11 rebounds.

Steamboat next plays at 6 p.m. Friday at home against Palisade.

With a week until the next game, Ameen said the focus remains on just getting better.

“We’ll keep going with that,” he said. “As the season goes on, you lessen the court time, but you keep going hard in practice and keep improving on everything.”

Sailors boys basketball tops Eagle Valley, 50-43

The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team never trailed Friday, beating Eagle Valley, 50-43.

The Sailors jumped out to big first quarter lead and kept the Devils from ever making a run.

“The reality was it was never a tight game,” Steamboat coach Luke DeWolfe said. “It was one of those where it looks a little closer on paper.”

Steamboat led 17-9 after one quarter, 31-22 at halftime and 43-32 going into the fourth quarter.

The Sailors, now 10-6 overall and 7-1 in league play, were without point guard Isiah Forsyth, who is battling an ankle injury.

In his absence, Steamboat got balanced scoring across the board.

Jack Spady led with 12 points. Randall Nelson had 10, Justin Anderson had 9, Charles Wood had 8 and Eric Trousil had 7.

Steamboat next plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Palisade.

DeWolfe said the focus will be on getting Forsyth healthy and continuing to get the offense to progress.
