Steamboat hockey snags key win against Monarch
February 11, 2012
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team remains in the playoff hunt after an 8-5 defeat of Monarch on Saturday. The win moves the Sailors into seventh place in the Foothills Conference.
Steamboat now owns the tiebreaker against Monarch, which fell to eighth place. Summit, which beat Steamboat, is in ninth place with three games left.
Steamboat wraps up the regular season at 3 p.m. Saturday at Ralston Valley, the conference's No. 2 team.
"If we win next Saturday, we could conceivably move into sixth," Steamboat coach Jeff Ruff said. "Right now, we could be in based on how some other teams play. But a win on Saturday would help us dictate our own future."
Saturday's win was big, especially for a team coming off a 7-1 loss Friday.
Steamboat got goals from Christian Ramirez and Alex Elliott in the first period to take a 2-1 lead. The Sailors broke it open in the second with two Lance Ostrom goals and one each from Jace Worden and Ben Wharton. They entered the third period up, 6-1.

But Monarch answered with three straight goals to cut it to 6-4 before Elliott got his second of the game. Ben Wharton added a late goal for the final tally.
"It was a good response from the guys," Ruff said. "We talked about rebounding, and they did."
