Steamboat hockey gets 2 late goals for win against Aspen
December 18, 2013
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team survived another white-knuckle thriller Wednesday, getting two third-period goals to win against homestanding Aspen, 2-1.
"Our guys took it on themselves to fix their game," coach Brent Tollar said. "That's hard to do during a game, but they came out, changed it up, really tested themselves and came out on top."
Ben Wharton punched in both scores, the first 69 seconds into the third period and the second at the 7:21 mark. Aspen tried desperately to rally and had several chances, but Steamboat goalie Trent Trask stayed strong in the net and got plenty of help from his defense.
"Ben put a great shot in, and our confidence level shot through the roof," Tollar said. "The boys were really starting to kick it into gear.
"Trent did a great job, didn't give a lot of rebounds and looked really confident. He played great for us."
Steamboat, 4-1, finally will play its first home game at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Howelsen Ice Arena against Columbine.
