Steamboat high school cheerleaders set for state
December 3, 2010
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School cheerleading team will have the opportunity to prove itself to the rest of the state.
The team will compete at 6:24 p.m. Saturday at the Denver Coliseum against at least 40 other Class 4A teams.
"It's basically the big show," Steamboat coach Shannon Uris said.
The event is the only Colorado High School Activities Association-sponsored event. Steamboat will have 14 cheerleaders compete. The event starts with one, five-minute warmup and then a 2 1/2-minute routine.
Steamboat started the learning techniques for the routine in June and started putting it together at the beginning of September.
Steamboat competed Nov. 13 in Denver at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Mile High Regionals. The team placed first in the non-tumbling, small varsity division, qualifying for nationals.
The Sailors traditionally finish in the top third of the state competition, and Uris said the goal is the same this year.
"Our goal is always to get in the top 10."
