Steamboat golf team picks up 1st win
August 14, 2013
Steamboat Springs — If Wednesday at Gypsum Creek Golf Course was any indication, the Steamboat Springs High School golf team now is the favorite for a regional title.
Sure, it’s only two tournaments into the season, but on Wednesday, the Sailors picked up their first win on the same course where the regional tournament will be held in the middle of September.
Winning at Gypsum Creek "was even a better sign," coach Steve Dodson said.
With the tournament serving as an early look for teams in the region, Steamboat got three scores in the 70s to pick up the win with a team score of 230.
Cortez was second at 234, and Montrose was third at 235.
Erik Sobeck paced Steamboat with a 3-over par 75. Brandon Martin shot 76, Britt Walton shot 79, Will Firestone shot 85 and Casey Weston shot 88.
"It definitely gives us confidence," said Sobeck, who had an eagle at the par 5 seventh to go along with one other birdie. "When we get to regionals, we'll have the mindset to win it and get our team to state."
The course is tough. Dodson described it as fitting to the golfer who can handle course management.
It requires lots of irons off the tee.
"Whoever manages it the best is going to have good results," he said.
Steamboat will send a different team to Rifle on Thursday for a tournament. The team also will play Monday at Bookcliff Golf Course in Grand Junction.
