Steamboat golf team finishes 2nd in Aspen
September 12, 2011
Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Springs High School golf coach Steve Dodson was hoping that a trip to Aspen on Monday would help the team carry some momentum into the final stretch of the season.
"I'm very happy with the direction this team is headed," Dodson said on the way home Monday. "Hopefully, we are starting to put some things together headed into the regional tournament."
The Sailors were led by freshman Brandon Martin who shot a 75 — his lowest tournament score of the season — to lead the team to a second-place finish in Aspen.
He was followed by teammates Andrew Firestone (78), Erik Sobeck (84), Sam Samlowski (89) and Casey Weston (94). The Sailors finished in second with a team total of 237, while Aspen won the tournament with a team total of 223.
"I've been playing pretty well the last five days," Martin said. "Hopefully, I will be able to carry that into next week's regional tournament in Rifle."
Dodson said he was excited about Martin's round Monday. Martin finished with 28 putts in the round and hit 14 greens to finish fourth among individuals at the tournament.

"It wasn't the strongest field we've faced this season, but you play the course not your opponent," Dodson said. "This was a very good round for Brandon, and a very good showing for our team."
The Sailors now will turn the team's attention to Rifle Creek Golf Course and next week's regional tournament.
"It's going to be a test," Martin said about Rifle. "But I feel like I'm on a pretty good streak right now, and I am hoping that I will be able to continue."
The regional tournament is scheduled to take place at the Rifle Creek Golf Club on Sept. 19 to 20.
