Steamboat girls tennis squad bounced from state tournament

— The weather cleared enough to allow the Steamboat Springs High School tennis team to get on with a full day of tennis at the state tournament Friday in Pueblo, but a rough day of results sent the squad packing.

Steamboat had one team advance to the consolation semifinals, the No. 2 doubles squad of Brooke Metzler and Maddie Labor. They lost a tight match, however, sending the Sailors home from the tournament before the final day.

"At the end of the day, they were all hugging and talking about the season," Steamboat coach John Aragon said. "We did have a great season. They all improved a lot, and as coaches, we were pleased to see that they came to battle."

Metzler and Labor lost to Cheyenne Mountain in the championship bracket but won in the consolation round to earn a shot at the consolation finals.

Aragon said the team didn't wilt from the challenge.

"Brooke, she really stepped up and hit some great returns and played with purpose," he said. "Maddie also stepped right in and controlled that match. We had a lot of opportunities we didn't close out, and pretty soon they had an edge on us, and we couldn't get it back."

He said the team didn't leave anything on the court.

"I was really pleased with the competitiveness. Our girls tried hard. The other teams were just better than us," Aragon said. "For our younger kids, it was an eye-opener, and they're going to have to go back and see what they have to do if they want to be a part of the last day of the state tournament."
