Steamboat girls tennis falls from state tournament

— They went out early, but at least they went out with a good match.

That's the consolation the Steamboat Springs High School tennis team brought home with it Friday after a disappointingly early exit from the Class 4A state championship tournament in Pueblo.

The Sailors entered the tournament Thursday with its full team, 11 players, but only Ellie Bender, playing at No. 1 singles, advanced. She lost in the second round, but got back into the action Friday in the consolation bracket.

Her stay there was short again, but it was memorable. The senior lost to Fountain Valley's Ik Feangreung in a long, back-and-forth match, 7-6, 7-5.

"Ellie had a good tournament," Steamboat coach John Aragon said. "She did better than anyone on our team and was at the toughest spot in the state tournament, No. 1 singles.

"I'm proud of how hard she worked and hopefully the lessons she learned will help her when she goes off to college."
