Steamboat girls soccer team ready for playoffs

— The Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer team will face an uphill battle when it opens its postseason Tuesday.

The Sailors are seeded 26th in the 32-team state soccer tournament, and they open play against No. 7 Golden.

Golden will be the home team, and the game will be on the Front Range, but exactly when and where will be determined today.

"It's the playoffs. We're excited," Steamboat coach Rob Bohlmann said. "It's a fair draw for us based on our record. We've never played Golden, so it's kind of an unknown opponent for both squads."

Golden, 13-3-1 on the season, lost two of its first four games but has dropped just one in the last 11. It won the Jefferson County league with a 9-0-1 record.

"They're a good side," Bohlmann said. "They have a rich soccer tradition, and it will be a great game."

Steamboat, meanwhile, won four of its final five games to secure a fourth-place finish in the Western Slope league. The team finished the regular season 10-5. Steamboat wrapped up its regular season Friday with a 3-0 win against Centaurus, the lone mutual opponent it shares with Golden. Golden beat the same team Wednesday, 6-0.

Neither that disparity in scoring nor Steamboat's comparatively low seed have Bohlmann fearful, however.

"We're in a great spot," he said. "We went into Friday night's (Centaurus) game and played very well, and we have a lot of momentum going into Tuesday," he said. "The most important step will be, do we go in with the right mentality and the right edge? We have the ability right off the bat to set the pace and the rhythm and to get their people on their heels."
