Steamboat girls soccer opens with 1-0 win against Summit
March 6, 2014
Steamboat Springs — A late second-half goal gave the Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer team a sweet start to the season Thursday.
The Sailors scored off a free kick play 25 yards out, with Alice Holmquist slamming in the goal to give the team the only score it would need for a 1-0 win against Summit in the season opener.
"It was a very typical first match of the season where the first half, we really struggled to find a rhythm, and it got better as things progressed," Steamboat coach Rob Bohlmann said. "In the second half, we were able to open them up and knock it around to create scoring opportunities. You could sense the goal was going to come."
It finally did with about 10 minutes remaining in the game.
The win sets up Steamboat for a crucial early season test at 11 a.m. Saturday at home against rival Battle Mountain. The Huskies and the Sailors played to ties in both of their meetings last season after Battle Mountain swept Steamboat in two contests the year before.
"We move right into a huge match," Bohlmann said. "The urgency will need to be there to be more dangerous and more inventive in our attacking half."
