Edwards — It had been nearly two weeks since Steamboat Springs soccer had played a game and that streak looked like it was going to continue about two hours before game time at Battle Mountain on Thursday.

But the snow lifted and the Sailors showed no rust in a 3-2 league-opening win against the Huskies at Battle Mountain in Edwards.

“I think we did an awesome job today,” Sailors senior Joanie Bier said. “We were really pumped to play, and it definitely showed. We couldn’t have started the (league) season in a better way.”

This game was snowed out last week, and it looked like there was no way the two rivals were going to play Thursday. Two hours before kickoff, the snow was pounding again.

“I would say that we were outplayed and out-coached, but not out-shoveled,” Huskies coach David Cope joked.

Once the skies cleared and Battle Mountain’s entourage plowed the field, the Sailors got to work with two goals in succession from Skylar Weir and Bier in the 19th and 21st minutes, respectively.

“We didn’t play poor, and we didn’t play great,” said Steamboat coach Rob Bohlmann, whose team upped its record to 3-0-1 overall and 1-0 in the Western Slope League. “I think the difference in today’s game was we were able to capitalize on our opportunities one time more than Battle Mountain. I thought it was a pretty evenly matched game.”

The Huskies made it a game with six minutes left in the half when Emily Young scored on a nice pass from Kelli Lindsay. Steamboat’s Jenna Peters opened the scoring in the second half in the 46th minute.

As has been the case for Battle Mountain (2-3, 1-3), the Huskies did not go down without a fight. Lindsay scored in the final two minutes to close the game to 3-2.

“No quit in this group, and that’s something I’m proud of,” Cope said. “It was evident at Palisade and it was evident at Glenwood, as it was today.”

And just off the ensuing kickoff, Battle Mountain nearly had the equalizer.

The Huskies’ Haille Hogfeldt fed Rosie Davies at the mouth of the goal, only to see Steamboat keeper Hannah Barkey come out and make the clutch save.

Barkley “was tremendous,” Bohlmann said. “That’s the second time this season she’s stopped a game-saving or game-tying goal. She did a great job.”

Steamboat returns down Colorado Highway 131 on Saturday to take on Eagle Valley at 11 a.m. at Hot Stuff Stadium. Meanwhile, the Huskies will try to get back on the winning track at Moffat County, also on Saturday.

“I just think sometimes with a young group we have to get past the little lapses,” Cope said. “In all three of these games against the top teams, there’s been a little lapse at the end of a half. (Thursday), there was a little lapse after (Steamboat’s first) goal. With the younger kids, we’ve got to get into a situation where they can keep their concentration through a whole half or through another situation.”
