Steamboat girls hoops snags 36-28 win against Palisade

Luke Graham

— It was good enough for long enough.

So even as a semi-frustrated Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team walked off the court Friday, it did so with a 36-28 win against Palisade in its back pocket.

"Three quarters were outstanding on both ends of the floor with execution and intensity," Steamboat coach John Ameen said. "Then in the fourth quarter they pick it up a little bit and we don't respond."

Steamboat, however, had done enough in the first 24 minutes of basketball to run away with the win.

The Sailors jumped out to a 11-0 lead early in the game and held a 13-4 advantage after one quarter and a 26-9 lead at halftime.

Steamboat's full-court press proved to be the biggest difference. Steamboat created 17 first-half turnovers and 31 in the game.

The Sailors led 33-17 going into the fourth quarter, when perhaps they began thinking about Saturday's game against league-leading Delta.

The Bulldogs chipped away, scoring the first eight points of the fourth quarter to cut the Sailors' lead to 33-25 with 1 minute, 10 seconds left. But it was too little, too late for Palisade.

"Wins are good and you want to win the right way," Ameen said. "Tonight we played the right way for three quarters."

Nikki Fry led the Sailors with 12 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Maggie Crouch added eight points off the bench.

Steamboat (9-5 overall, 3-1 in the Western Slope League) plays Delta at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Kelly Meek Gymnasium.
