Steamboat girls fall flat in Steamboat Shoot-Out basketball tourney opener

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball wasn’t able to reverse last season’s struggles Thursday as it opened play in its home tournament, the Steamboat Shoot-Out.

The Sailors fell in the first round to Prairie View, 55-9.

The Thunderhawks were led by 15 points from sophomore Madelyn Schmidt. Victoria Cabrera was also in double digits with 10.

The Sailors got most of their points, six, from sophomore Samantha Kennedy. Shelbee Weiss also scored a basket and Siera Harrison added a free throw.

Next up for the Sailors is a 4:45 p.m. game Friday in the tournament’s consolation bracket against Montrose, which lost 35-32 against Mead.
