Steamboat girls basketball rolls to 50-27 win
January 13, 2012
Steamboat Springs — After a tough weekend last week, the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team used a big first half to easily beat Battle Mountain, 50-27, on Friday night.
The Sailors, who struggled mightily last week on offense, used their defense Friday to come away with easy baskets.
Steamboat (7-6) forced 38 Battle Mountain turnovers, including a whopping 14 in the first quarter on its way to a 15-2 lead after the first eight minutes.
"That's the thing. It was a win and we played well for the most part," Sailors coach John Ameen said. "That's what we want. Not just the winning part, we want the improvement."
The Huskies (2-9) cut it to 12 points at 29-17 in the third quarter, before the Sailors ended the quarter on a 9-4 run to take a 38-21 lead into the fourth quarter.
Sydney Bauknecht and Nikki Fry led the Sailors with 11 points apiece, while Alex Feeley chipped in 10.
Battle Mountain's Marianna Garcia had eight, and Shauna Roberts had six.
Battle Mountain next plays at 2 p.m. Saturday at home against Moffat County.
Steamboat plays at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eagle Valley.
