Steamboat freeskiers wrap up season at USASA nationals

Logan Banning

— Logan Banning helped lead the way for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's freestyle skiers at the USASA nationals earlier this month at Copper Mountain.

Banning was first overall in the boys ages 16 to 18 division, combining a second-place finish in ski cross, a third-place showing in the half-pipe and a fourth-place slope-style performance to earn the overall honor.

Lennon Vaughn was 11th in the pipe and 16th in slope-style, and Penn Lukens was 12th in the pipe and 17th in slope-style, all in the men's open class. Robbie Brown was 11th, Jake Sear was 30th, and Jon Satterfield was 26th in the boys ages 13 to 15 half-pipe. Jesse James Pugh was 22nd in slope-style in the same age division.

Payton McElhiney was sixth in the boys ages 10 to 12 half-pipe division and was awarded with the "hot trick of the day." He finished just ahead of Sammy Schuiling, who was seventh. McElhiney was seventh in slope-style, Kai Doyle was 12th and Schuiling was 21st.

Andy Schuiling was 15th in the boys ages 9 and younger slope-style competition.

"It was a great event to end the season with," Winter Sports Club coach Tony Lodico said. "One of the things I love about this event is that it has athletes of all ages from the freeskier and freestyle programs through junior free and even a bumps and jumps athlete competing. It makes it a lot of fun for me to see the program working and to let the young guys see what the big boys are doing."
