Battle Mountain football made short work of Steamboat Springs, routing the Sailors, 61-22, Friday night in Edwards.

The Huskies at 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Western Slope League are all but in the playoffs for the first time since 1994, while the Sailors (0-9, 0-6) continued their post-2009 state semifinal slide.

The Sailors started the game well with a 12-play, 60-yard match, mixing up the pass and the run. Steamboat’s Evan Hornstein capped the drive with a 7-yard scamper. Clad in pink socks for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Huskies slowly awoke, converting a fourth-and-3, with Zach Guida rumbling 32 yards for a touchdown. The Huskies went for two with Jake Engle completing the conversion pass for two for an 8-7 lead.

Battle Mountain needed only one play on its next drive. Reeve Sanders took on most of the Sailors defense, breaking a 76-yard touchdown run. The Huskies continued to go for the two-point conversion with Chris Libertini running it in.

Guida continued the onslaught with a 31-yard scamper with 48 seconds left in the first. Battle Mountain opted for the extra point.

Steamboat still showed some fight as quarterback Christian Ramirez completed a long pass to Michael Yost and then Hornstein roared 24 yards to the house, closing it to 23-15.

The Huskies responded with a quick drive, all on the ground. Sanders flew for 32 yards, and the Huskies went for two successfully again, extending their lead to 31-15.

Battle Mountain kept rolling, this time, using a Engle to Libertini pass for 6 yards and six with 3:31 left in the half. The Huskies showed a little more of an air attack, this time an 8-yarder to Paton Lovett. The Huskies went for two to make it 46-15 just before the half.

The Huskies picked up where they left off in the second half. After a false start, Sanders breezed 55 yards for his third score of the night. Battle Mountain again went for the two points and got them easily. Battle Mountain got the ball back on the Sailors’ 19 and needed little time to find the end zone. Sanders went 15 yards and the Huskies had a comfortable 61-15 lead.

Steamboat was able to shut down Battle Mountain’s second-string offense, recovering a fumble on the Huskies’ 2. Steamboat quarterback Christian Ramirez took it from there for a score.

Steamboat next plays against Moffat County at 7 p.m. Friday.
