Steamboat football falls 48-12 in season-opening game
August 30, 2013
Steamboat Springs — As the trend in football continues to be faster, spread out and wide open offenses, Eagle Valley and coach John Ramunno remain classics.
There is no hiding what the Devils do. They line up in a double-wing offense, cluster it up and jam the ball down the field.
"We like to be in a phone booth," Ramunno said. "We like to be in there and be like Superman ready to burst out. We like this offense."
On Friday, Eagle Valley's offense was all Superman and Steamboat Springs was Lex Luthor sans Kryptonite.
The Devils did whatever they wanted, obliterating the Sailors, 48-12.
Eagle Valley outgained Steamboat 542 to 161 and had all but made it a laugher after two quarters.

The Devils and their double-wing attack had 512 yards rushing on 53 carries.
"I'd say we lost the war in the trenches, but we didn't play well for a majority of the game," Steamboat coach Lonn Clementson said.
The first half told the story.
Eagle Valley rushed out to a 28-0 halftime lead on touchdown runs from Riley Rowles, Luis Chavez and Joel Gardea. Quarterback Orin Reichardt threw a touchdown pass to Jacob Morrison for the first half scoring.
But the numbers tell just how dominant Eagle Valley was. The Devils outgained the Sailors 245 to nine in the first half.
Steamboat's lines were outmatched on both fronts. The Sailors couldn't rush the ball and gave up five sacks.
Steamboat's first-half drive summary read like an obituary to modern-day football. The Sailors had four three-and-outs and a turnover on downs in five first-half possessions.
Ugly doesn't do it justice.
"We felt the other team had more desire than we did for a lot of the game," Clementson said. "If we want to improve, it has to come from a ton of desire."
Steamboat showed life in the fourth quarter, but it was just a little eye shadow to cover the bruises from the previous three.
Mitch McCannon scored a pair of touchdowns, one on a 1-yard run and the other on a 36-yard pass from sophomore Zachary Holm.
Holm, getting his first varsity start, struggled going 4 of 13 for 94 yards.
The offensive star was Eagle Valley's Rowles. The junior played on special teams and a little defense last year. Through two games, he's looking like a player of the year candidate.
Rowles had 272 yards on 16 carries to go along with two touchdowns. He scored four touchdowns in last week's opener for the Devils. On Friday, he had a 90-yard touchdown to open the second half when he looked like the anchor of a track team.
"We've run this offense for so long, we know what to do and when to do it," Rowles said. On Friday, "it came together."
Steamboat (0-1) next plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Summit. Eagle Valley (2-0) has a week off before it plays at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at home against Delta.
