Steamboat football camp starts Tuesday

Steamboat Springs — Members of the Steamboat Sailors football program will take to the field for the first time this year on Tuesday as they huddle up for football camp.
The annual Steamboat Springs football mini-camp runs through June 1.
“It’s kind of an opportunity to bring the eighth-graders up and expose them to high school football and start our football family for next year,” said Sailors varsity linebacker Gaspar Perricone.
Any student who will enter the ninth through 12th grades who wants to play football next season can attend, said Mark Drake, head varsity coach.
The coaches will go over offense, defense and special teams with the players, Drake said. At each night’s conclusion, there will be a flag football game.
“We’ll work on a few changes we’re making offensively and a new defensive package we’re working on,” Drake said. “Every night at the end is a flag football game.”
There is a $25 fee to take part in the camp.
The camp runs every day from 3:45 to 6 p.m. at the Steamboat Springs High School field.
About 60 kids are already signed up, Drake said.
Applications are still available at the front offices of Steamboat Springs High School and Steamboat Springs Middle School, Drake said.
