Steamboat City Council to hash out goals Tuesday at facilitated retreat
January 31, 2014
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs City Council was given a rare and interesting homework assignment to complete before their next meeting Tuesday.
Much like a quarterback studies game film, they were tasked to go back and watch one City Council meeting to get a feel for how they came across and how the meeting went.
The "teacher" giving this assignment is Todd Musselman, a local business coach and motivational speaker who has been tasked to lead the council in a four-hour planning retreat.
Musselman is more experienced coaching businesses such as Coors and SmartWool that don’t have as many competing political views and viewpoints as a city council.
But he’s still looking forward to Tuesday’s session.
"It’s a great challenge for me," Musselman said. "I love it."
Musselman said one of the goals for the retreat is for the council to identify three to four actionable goals.
"I understand that they all have a different political agenda. It’s a matter of can we all coalesce around these four goals and work toward them," he said. "I’ve watched a lot of the City Council meetings since the November election, and certainly there’s a lot of agreement. But there are disagreements."
Since November, the new council already has tackled some major items ranging from employee pay raises to accepting a raise for themselves.
Oftentimes, the votes haven’t been unanimous.
New council member Tony Connell, who serves on Yampa Valley Medical Center’s board of trustees, emerged as one of the biggest proponents of the upcoming retreat.
He said his experiences with strategic planning sessions have been positive, especially ones the hospital had leading up to the construction of Casey’s Pond.
"I think it’s a vital tool for a lot of groups and businesses," Connell said last month.
The city has budgeted $2,500 for the planning session and the prep work that included Musselman interviewing council members.
The retreat is open to the public and is being held at 4 p.m. in the Champagne Meeting Room at Rex’s American Bar & Grill.
