Steamboat briefs: Yampa Valley Sustainability Council hosts Green Gardens Tour on Tuesday

The fifth annual Green Gardens Tour, sponsored by Yampa Valley Sustainability Council, is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, beginning at the Community Garden on Oak Street between Sixth and Seventh streets. Gardens highlighted on the downtown walking tour are local, residential, sustainable food gardens. Discussion will revolve around tips to grow gardens in a short season at high altitude, as well as a short talk about the CSU Extension's Master Gardener Program starting this winter. Business Plan Competition submissions due Sept. 15

Submissions for the 2014 Steamboat Springs Business Plan Competition are due by 5 p.m. Sept. 15. The contest is open to those looking to establish a new business or substantially change the direction of an existing business in Routt County.

Plans should be submitted to Randy Rudasics at the Yampa Valley Entrepreneurship Center at Colorado Mountain College's Alpine Campus. The winner of the contest will receive $10,000 in prize money, and the second-place plan will earn $5,000. Prize money is supplied by the city of Steamboat Springs. The contest is sponsored by Colorado Mountain College, Yampa Valley SCORE and the city.

Rules, guidelines and judging criteria for the contest are available at the Yampa Valley Entrepreneurship Center or by emailing Rudasics at rrudasics@coloradomtn.edu.

Integrated Community to hold fundraiser Saturday

The second annual Integrated Community Showcase fundraiser is from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. The evening will feature food, drinks and dancing to the live music of Caliente. The minimum cost to attend the fundraiser is $25 for adults and $5 for children. A bean count contest also will be held, with a top prize of a deluxe Denver weekend with first-row Avalanche tickets, hotel and dining, plus a 2014-15 Steamboat Ski Area adult season pass and a Steamboat staycation that includes a half-day fly-fishing trip, lodging at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort and dinner at Harwigs/L'Apogee. The cost to participate in the contest is $20 per guess or $100 for five guesses at $100, and all who enter receive an Integrated Community T-shirt or deluxe Integrated Community shopping bag. Survey about litter issues available to community

To help the Routt County Litter Solutions Committee better understand the issue and solutions for litter in the Yampa Valley, the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council is having a survey that community members can participate in.

Steamboat Art Museum seeking shift volunteers

Steamboat Art Museum is looking for volunteers to assist in greeting visitors, assisting in special events or working in the museum's store. 

Shifts are 3 1/2 hours, one day per week Tuesdays through Saturdays during the summer and winter exhibits. 

Perks include getting to enjoy the fabulous art exhibits, meeting exhibiting artists at exhibit openings, free admission to all Saturday lectures during exhibit opening and meeting visitors from all across the country and world.
