Residents reminded about preventing bear conflicts
Colorado Parks and Wildlife provided the following tips to prevent conflicts with bears:
■ Put trash out only after 6 a.m. on trash pickup days unless it is stored in a bear-proof container. Ratchet straps work to secure trash cans where bears have figured out the cable system. Make sure Dumpsters always are latched. Clean garbage cans regularly to eliminate food odors.
■ Parks and Wildlife recommends feeding birds only when bears are hibernating. If you feed birds while bears are active, bring bird feeders in at night or hang them 10 feet off the ground and 10 feet away from anything a bear can climb.
■ Don't leave pet food outside.
Recommended Stories For You
■ Keep your garage door and all ground level windows closed. Keep car doors locked.
■ Clean barbecue grills after each use and store them inside, if possible. Clean up thoroughly after picnics in the yard or on the deck.
■ If you have fruit trees, pick fruit before it gets too ripe, and don't allow fruit to fall and rot on the ground.
■ If you keep chickens or other small livestock, build a secure enclosure and bring the animals inside at night. Clean up pens regularly to reduce odors.
■ Bear-proof your compost area or don't compost food scraps.
