Steamboat briefs: VNA issues reminder about World Arthritis Day on Friday

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is reminding readers that Friday is World Arthritis Day. Exercise is crucial for people with arthritis. It increases strength and flexibility, reduces joint pain and helps combat fatigue, according to the release. Global Cooking series to begin at noon Saturday

An interactive Global Cooking series, "Thai Cooking Made Easy," begins from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at City Cafe. The class is $25. Call 970-846-1135 to register.

Mainstreet collects purses, wallets for weekend event

Mainstreet Steamboat Springs is collecting gently used purses, totes and wallets to be used as a fundraiser to benefit the Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project, the local charity chosen by the Sisters in Steamboat event being held through Sunday. The purses will be available for purchase throughout the event, and proceeds will be used to assist local women with breast cancer services. Drop off donations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Mainstreet office, 141 Ninth St., or call 970-846-1800 for pickup. 

Registration is open for range of ASSET Clubs

Registration is open for Afterschool Action, School Days Off and ASSET Clubs. The session runs from Oct. 22 to Jan 4. Ski & Sport Swap is Nov. 9 and 10 at middle school

The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Ski & Sport Swap is Nov. 9 and 10 at Steamboat Springs Middle School. Consignment tags for sports gear can be picked up at the Winter Sports Club office from Nov. 1 to 8, and consigned or donated items can be dropped off at the middle school Nov. 9. Early birds can attend for $5 at 7 p.m. Nov. 9. Admission is free from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10. The event supports the Winter Sports Club, and all donations are tax deductible. Orientation Wednesday for potential STARS volunteers

An orientation for those interested in volunteering for Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports is from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Roundup Room in Gondola Square. The training is for new volunteers who are interested in teaching and assisting people with disabilities how to ski or snowboard this winter.
