Steamboat briefs: Steamboat schools in top 8 percent of state districts

— The Colorado Department of Education announced Tuesday that the Steamboat Springs School District is one of 14 districts statewide to be “Accredited with Distinction.”

The Department of Education announced the school districts that received the highest accreditation rating based on a new process that evaluates whether districts experience academic growth based on certain performance indicators and prepare students for postsecondary education or careers.

“I just wrote staff an e-mail saying compliments to each and every one of you for your high standards, professionalism and commitment to our students. I am privileged to work with you,” Steamboat Springs Superintendent Shalee Cunningham said. “That’s how I feel. I really believe this entire community is committed to the schools, and this is the result. We are truly an outstanding school district.”

This is the first year the new accreditation rankings — part of new legislation, the Education Accountability Act of 2009 — were released for Colorado’s 178 school districts.

According to the Department of Education, the Hayden School District is “Accredited,” the second highest ranking out of five, and the South Routt School District is “Accredited with Improvement Plan,” the middle ranking. A total of 111 school districts were rated either “Accredited” or “Accredited with Distinction.”
