Steamboat Briefs: Steamboat Institute plans presentation on Iraq, Iran

The Steamboat Institute hosts Dr. Michael Ledeen from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Ranch at Steamboat, 1800 Ranch Road, for a talk about Iraq and Iran titled "The Real War."
Ledeen previously has made appearances on Fox News, radio talk shows, PBS's NewsHour and CNN's Larry King Live in addition to contributing to The Wall Street Journal and the National Review Online, according to a news release.
The cost is $10 per person or free for students with an ID. Registration is required by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Parenting and Pizza event Thursday in Steamboat
A Parenting and Pizza event titled "How to help the whole family survive and thrive" is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Soda Creek Elementary School, 220 Park Ave. The free program includes pizza and child care.

Fall yoga retreat is next month at Perry-Mansfield
SoulSpark Journeys hosts its fall yoga retreat Nov. 2 and 3 at the Yoga Center of Steamboat and Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp. The retreat includes yoga and meditation classes, workshops and meals (breakfast and lunch). The cost is $175 through Oct. 14 and $195 thereafter. Discounted rates offered at Haymaker Golf Course
Haymaker Golf Course, which is scheduled to close Nov. 3 depending on weather, is offering discounted rates throughout the rest of the season. Residents pay $36 for nine holes or $55 for 18 holes, but during course maintenance, those who play 18 should be prepared to play the front or back nine twice.
The golf course's final tournament of the season is at 10 a.m. Oct. 19. The shotgun start, best ball tournament features two-player teams at a cost of $20 per person.
The pro shop also would like to remind those with punch cards, gift certificates or tournament credits that they need to be redeemed by the end of the season.

Several fall inspiration classes start in this month
Fall inspiration classes at Emerald Mountain School begin in October and are open to all Steamboat students.
■ BookTrials is from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursdays from Oct. 3 to 24 for students in first through fifth grades. The cost is $100.
■ Jiu Jitsu is from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Mondays from Oct. 7 to Nov. 18 for students in second through fourth grades. The cost is $140.
■ Jiu Jitsu is from 4:50 to 5:50 p.m. Mondays from Oct. 14 to Nov. 18 for students in fifth through eighth grades. The cost is $100.

Free winter coats available to area residents in need
Hayden Congregational Church in conjunction with Love INC will have free winter coats available for those in need from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today, Monday and Wednesday at the church, 202 E. Jefferson Ave., Hayden.
LiveWell program to help families with healthy eating
LiveWell Northwest Colorado is helping families be healthy by working to improve eating habits and to be more physically active through the "Let's Go! 5-2-1-0" program. The program sets the goal each day of eating five or more fruits and vegetables, watching two or fewer hours of TV, getting an hour or more of physical activity and drinking zero sugary drinks. Carpool matching service offered to local residents
Residents of Routt, Moffat and Rio Blanco counties have access to a free, online carpool matching service sponsored by Yampa Valley Data Partners, according to a news release.

westcolorado, will be a resource to help Northwest Colorado residents save on transportation costs. The project was created as part of the Northwest Colorado Energy Education Plan, which was funded by a grant from the Colorado Energy Office.
