Steamboat briefs: South Routt teachers run to raise funds for schools

A group of teachers from South Routt School District will complete the Run, Rabbit Run ultramarathon as a relay team in September to raise funds for the South Routt Education Endowment Fund, which was established to help fund South Routt schools. Lowell Whiteman Primary students receive honors

The following Lowell Whiteman Primary School students received academic honors for the third trimester of the 2011-12 school year: Teague Burger, Madeline Craig-Scheckman, Leah Rowse, Macayla Scheidt, Sage Turek, Drew Williamson, Nicole Zedeck and Noah Zedeck.

Schoolhouse tour tickets are available at discount

A limited number of discounted tickets are available for the Elkhead Rock Schoolhouse tour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 7 as part of Hayden Heritage Weekend. The events costs $125, but discounted tickets are available for $75 by calling the Hayden Heritage Museum at 970-276-4380. The cost includes a catered picnic lunch, interpretive walking tours and shuttle transportation. The tour is led by Dorothy Wickenden, author of "Nothing Daunted." Proceeds benefit the museum.

Medical center program to address mortality Tuesday

Yampa Valley Medical Center's June Taking Care of Me program is titled "Mortality, Morality & Honor: The End-Of-Life-Paradigm." The free program is at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Conference Room 1. The discussion will be presented by Dr. Charles Hamlin and will blend philosophy, facts and humor to provide insight into how our attitudes about death have been shaped by history, religion and law. Members of YVMC's ethics committee will be available to help with living wills and other advance directives. Dr. Hamlin served on the Compassion & Choices Colorado Chapter board of directors for three years before joining the national board in April.

Community Cultivation seeks help for program

Community Cultivation, a vocational horticultural program that teaches work-ready skills for individuals with disabilities, needs volunteers for its summer garden program at the Yampa River Botanic Park. Rotary Youth Exchange is seeking host families

Steamboat Springs Rotary clubs are looking for six host families to share their homes for about three months with students from other countries. For the 2012-13 academic year, there are two students lined up to come to Steamboat: a boy from Brazil and a girl from Mexico. Both students are 17 years old, good students and motivated. The students arrive in August and return home in mid-June. Host families do not have to be involved in Rotary or have children in the school system.
