Steamboat briefs: Seminars at Steamboat announces Pakistan talk

Seminars at Steamboat, a free speaker series that focuses on public policy, has announced Robin Raphel, the U.S. coordinator for non-military assistance to Pakistan, will lead a talk titled “Pakistan and its Difficult Neighbors” at 5 p.m. Aug. 1 at Strings Music Pavilion. Raphel is a career diplomat who holds the rank of ambassador.

Previously announced Seminars speakers include:

■ July 8: Stephen Klineberg, sociologist and demographer at Rice University, will discuss “The Changing Face of America.”



■ July 25: Robert O’Harrow, a journalist at The Washington Post, will discuss “The Threat From Cyberspace: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You.”

■ Aug. 20: Martin Feldstein and William Gale will discuss “Reforming our Broken Tax System.” Feldstein is an economist at Harvard University and former director of the Council of Economic Advisers. Gale is chairman of economic policy at the Brookings Institution.

Spring Fling and Senior Awards is Friday at noon

The Spring Fling and Senior Awards is at noon Friday at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. Lunch is braised beef and will be served at noon. The cost for lunch is $3 for those 60 and older and $6 for those younger than 60. As part of the annual event, Senior of the Year and Friend of the Seniors awards will be presented at 12:30 p.m. Register by calling 970-879-0633 by today.

Christina Appel received bachelor’s from Wyoming

Christina Appel, a 2009 graduate of Hayden High School, received a Bachelor of Science degree in animal and pre-veterinary sciences May 11 from the University of Wyoming. For the past four semesters, Appel was named to the president’s list, which requires a 4.0 GPA. She will pursue a master’s degree in animal nutrition in the fall at University of Wyoming.

Environmental education workshop is set for June 1

A Project Learning Tree workshop for prekindergarten educators is June 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bud Werner Memorial Library. The cost is $35, which includes the Environmental Experience for Early Childhood Activity Guide. This workshop will teach educators how to use nature and the environment with preschool-age children. To register or for more information, call Carolina Manriquez or Claudia Stout, of the Colorado State Forest Service, at 970-879-0475.
