Steamboat briefs: Routt County Search and Rescue accepts applications for volunteers

The Routt County Search and Rescue is searching for members 21 and older to volunteer. Background checks will be processed by the Routt County Sheriff's Office.

Special skills are not necessary to join, but some outdoor recreational experience is recommended, and a significant time commitment will be required.

The training program generally takes six to 10 months to complete and includes 10 training sessions, each focused on a particular skill area. Training sessions are Tuesday evenings with an occasional weekend daytime training.

Volunteers needed for Wine Festival event in August

Volunteers are needed from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 10 for the Steamboat Wine Festival's Toast of Steamboat. Volunteers must be 21 or older and will receive a free ticket worth $80 to the Aug. 9 Stroll of Steamboat.

Text message service helps tobacco users quit for good

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association reminds young adult smokers that a free text message program is available to help them quit tobacco.

SmokefreeTXT is a free mobile service providing encouragement and tips to help young smokers quit for good. Quitting tobacco usually takes multiple attempts, but studies show support, including text message programs, significantly can improve a person's chance for success

Published travel writer to host CMC seminar Saturday

Edith Lynn Hornik-Beer, whose travel writing has been published in ELLE Magazine, the Sunday New York Times, Steamboat Magazine as well as other major newspapers and magazines, will be giving a three-hour seminar titled "Writing A Travel Article That Sells" from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Colorado Mountain College's Alpine Campus.

Local groups reach out to returning service members

The Routt County Veterans Affairs, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4264 and American Legion Post 44 in Steamboat would like to meet and greet local sons and daughters returning from military service. The VFW is looking for female war veterans. The American Legion also is looking for new members.
