Steamboat briefs: Registration open for fall orchestra programs

— Registration is open for the Steamboat Symphony Or­ches­­tra's fall Education Pro­grams.

Youth Orchestra, String Ensemble and Cello Choir Programs are offered for violin, viola, cello and bass players, youths and adults. Other instruments may be included in Youth Orchestra. Youth scholarships are available for participants younger than 20.

Bible study at Concordia starts up again Thursday

The nondenominational Community Bible Study at Concordia Lutheran Church starts up again Thursday.

The study is from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursdays at the church, 755 Concordia Lane (corner of Maple Street and Amethyst Drive). A preschool program is available.

Library has TumbleBooks feature for young children

Bud Werner Memorial Library now has TumbleBooks. The TumbleBook Library is a collection of more than 300 animated, talking picture books created from well-loved print picture books and easy readers.

To access TumbleBooks, go to the library website,, and click on the TumbleBook icon; no password is needed.

Come to Library Hall at 11:30 a.m. or 5 p.m. Sept. 15 for a 30-minute TumbleBook demonstration by the children's librarian.

Local groups reach out to returning service members

The Routt County Veterans Affairs, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4264 in Steamboat Springs and American Legion Post 44 in Steamboat would like to meet and greet local sons and daughters returning from military service.

The VFW Post is looking for female war veterans. The American Legion also is looking for new members.

History museum looking for front desk volunteers

The Tread of Pioneers Museum is seeking volunteers.

The Steamboat Springs museum needs front desk volunteers to work three-hour shifts. Duties include greeting visitors, answering phones, and collecting admissions and gift shop sales. Friday and Saturday afternoon shifts especially are needed. The museum also needs help with upcoming special events and is seeking school tour guides.

Dance Theatre accepting scholarship applications

Steamboat Dance Theatre is accepting applications for the Amy Flint Memorial Scholarship Fund for Dance and Technical Production Training.

This fund provides assistance for dancers of all ability levels who want to pursue their love of dance, or for those interested in training in technical production.

Hayden library seeks paid teenage reading buddies

The Hayden Public Library will begin its annual program for reading mentors.

"Bradley's Book Buddies" will accept applications from teens ages 13 to 18 to be paid mentors for the summer.

Teens are matched with younger children and they read together, play reading games, and generally help the youngsters to continue reading practice throughout the summer.

Any teens interested in applying can pick up an application during normal hours.
