Steamboat briefs: Prudential Steamboat Realty collecting toys for Mickey’s Fund drive

Prudential Steamboat Realty is collecting toys again this year to take to Denver Children’s Hospital on behalf of Moose Barrow’s Mickey’s Fund. This annual toy drive collects more than 3,000 toys every year for children and families who will be spending their holiday season in the hospital.

New, unwrapped gifts can be dropped off at Prudential Steamboat Realty in Wildhorse Plaza until Tuesday. The toys will be distributed to the children in Denver Children’s Hospital the next day. Donations are also welcome, and checks can be made out to Mickey’s Fund.

Moose Barrows began the fund in memory of his son, Mickey, who spent three years at the hospital with a heart condition. After Mickey’s death at age 3, Barrows received money from sympathetic friends and family. He put the money into the Mickey Barrows Memorial Trust and used it to purchase Christmas toys for children at the hospital. The fund continued to grow after the death of Barrows’ father, Ray Barrows, who asked that all memorial donations go to the trust.

The following products are subject to recall: “Colorado Best Beef” brand various fresh, smoked and shelf-stable meat products; “James Ranch” brand jerky and summer sausage; “Rocky Plains Meats” brand hams, bacon, raw and smoked sausage, jerky and raw poultry; “John Long Farms” brand fresh and smoked pork products; “Horned Beef” brand jerky; and “Mile High Hungarian Sausage” brand fresh and smoked bacon and sausage.

Motorized travel limits on Wolford begin Sunday

The Bureau of Land Management will begin its annual winter restrictions on motorized travel north of Kremmling in the Wolford Mountain Travel Management Area on Sunday to help reduce stress on wintering big game herds. These restrictions to motorized travel will remain in effect through April 15 in most areas.

“We have these restrictions to help reduce disturbance to wildlife in this key wintering area,” Kremmling field manager Stephanie Odell said in a news release. “We are reminding the public to observe these restrictions and also to report any violations they see.”

The Wolford Mountain area includes public lands between U.S. Highway 40 and Grand County Road 2 (Back Troublesome Road). A map showing open routes is available at http://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/fo/kfo.html

The seasonal restrictions are extended in two areas of Wolford Mountain to protect nesting raptors: The Wolford Mountain Single Track closure runs through May 31, and the Muddy Creek Trail north of the Muddy Creek fishing access bridge is closed until July 31.

Snowmobile use is restricted to routes marked with orange diamonds on the kiosk maps. All other travel routes and areas on BLM lands on Wolford Mountain will be closed to all motorized use. Changing conditions may cause the restrictions to be modified in the Wolford area, so check often for restriction updates.
