Steamboat briefs: Prescribed burn slated for this week in west Routt

A prescribed burn is expected to take place this week near the Indian Run State Wildlife Area in western Routt County, south of Hayden, according to a news release.
The burn will take place on the Yampa Ranger District beginning as soon as Wednesday and could take one to three days to complete depending on weather conditions.
The planned burned comprises 800 acres and is intended to reduce fuel loading and increase forage quality for deer and elk wintering on National Forest land, according to the release.

Volunteers sought to serve as advocates for victims
Advocates Building Peaceful Communities is recruiting volunteers who are interested in becoming victim advocates. Twenty-five hours of domestic violence training will be in May. Call Diane or Heidi 970-879-2034 for more information.
Nominations accepted for annual Doc Willett awards
Nominations are being accepted for the fifth annual Doc Willett Health Care Heritage Awards, which will be held Aug. 23 at Strings Music Pavilion. The awards highlight the current quality and scope of health care while paying tribute to the roots of hospital care in Routt County, according to a news release.
Nominations for the Health Care Community Advocate and Health Care Professional awards are due by 5 p.m. Friday. The criteria for the Health Care Community Advocate award are a resident of the Yampa Valley whose efforts have resulted in improving the health, available services or health care environment to benefit the community. The criteria for the Health Care Professional award are a health care professional who has spent a significant portion of his or her career in delivering direct patient care or services to individuals.

Soroco's Lauryn Bruggink receives award Sunday
Lauryn Bruggink, a 2012 graduate of Soroco High School, was recognized with the Strength of Character Award on Sunday at the Wayland Baptist Spring Athletic Banquet for her contributions to the women's wrestling team, according to a news release.
Bruggink competed in the WCWA National Championships in Bristol, Tenn., and at the ASCIS National Championships in Oklahoma City this season, according to the release.
She is a freshman and is majoring in pre-physical therapy.
