Steamboat briefs: Preschool screenings held in Routt County this month

Steamboat Springs — Routt County preschool screenings are Monday and Tuesday in Steamboat Springs and March 24 in Hayden. The service is for children ages 2 years and 9 months to 5 years. Screeners will check children's vision, hearing, motor, speech, language and concept skills. Call to make an appointment. Fund created for injured snowmobiler Chris Brown
On Feb. 19, professional snowmobiler Chris Brown, of Steamboat Springs and Whistler, British Columbia, suffered multiple serious injuries while attempting a double drop on his snowmobile near Whistler.
His injuries include: an open book fracture of the pelvis, two fractured vertebra, a shattered heel, a fractured tibia and fibula, a torn abdominal muscle, a fractured and permanently deformed sacrum, a lacerated bladder and stomach and internal bleeding. Chris still remains in the Vancouver General Hospital and is on the long road to recovery. Doctors expect him to be in a wheelchair for at least three months.

Parent and child skating class to be held Thursdays
A parent-tot skating class is from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. Thursdays at Howelsen Ice Arena. The playgroup program is designed to teach children from 2 1/2 to 4 years old the basic skills of ice skating and being comfortable on the ice. Yampatika is searching for summer program sponsors
Yampatika is looking for sponsors for its summer programs and youth scholarships. The nonprofit organization's 2011 sponsorship goal is $7,000.
The summer camp scholarships go to children ages 5 to 14. The camps include an overnight camping or backpacking trip for children ages 9 and older.
Sponsorships also can go to this year's 12th annual Wild Edible Feast, to be held June 3 at Sweetwater Grill. Guests enjoy a gourmet dinner of native wild edible plants and other local fare, a silent auction and a live auction. All proceeds from this event support Yampatika's Environmental Literacy Program. Yampatika's adult field schools offer diverse outings focused on the local environment. They include "Hunting the Wild Mushroom," "Wild Horses of the Sand Wash Basin" and wildflower walks.

Local sustainability group hires 2 new employees
The Yampa Valley Sustainability Council has hired two new employees to complement its existing one-person staff and six-member board of directors, according to a news release.
Kim Kline, new YVSC coordinator, will take over responsibilities for community outreach and organization growth, and Eric Olson, administrative assistant, will take over responsibilities for the group's behind-the-scenes maintenance and growth.
The organization's previous coordinator, Anne Mudgett, has been renamed funding coordinator and will be primarily focusing on grant writing and establishing funding for the organization as well as supporting a few upcoming events.
Developmental disabilities group seeking volunteers
Horizons Specialized Services is seeking volunteers to serve as mentors to individuals with developmental disabilities in Moffat and Routt counties. Volunteers spend at least three hours a month with Horizons clients. Activities can include hiking, biking, bowling, swimming, fishing, walks and more. The group needs volunteers for the Steamboat Marathon, swimming and boating programs.
