Steamboat briefs: Mainstreet Steamboat raises $2,200 for flowers

Amber Garrity

Mainstreet Steamboat Springs Manager Tracy Barnett announced Tuesday that the organization successfully raised the $2,200 needed to purchase flower baskets for downtown Steamboat Springs. Barnett wrote that more than 50 people donated $20 to $500 toward the summer tradition.

The cost of the baskets is more than $10,000, with a little more than $2,000 going toward the purchase of the baskets from a Fort Collins nursery and the rest going to a landscaping company to keep the flowers watered daily throughout the summer.

After the flower baskets were cut from the city's budget last summer, Interim City Manager Deb Hinsvark announced the city would provide $8,000 to fund watering costs this year.

The baskets will be hung in mid-June.
