Steamboat Briefs: Lineup for spring author series at library announced

Bud Werner Memorial Library has scheduled its spring series of free author talks. The lineup includes: Jim Davidson, Colorado climber and author of "The Ledge," on March 18; Cheryl Strayed, The New York Times No. 1 bestselling author of "Wild," on April 11; Chris Bohjalian, author of bestsellers including "The Night Strangers," "Secrets of Eden," "Skeletons at the Feast," "The Double Bind," "Midwives" and his newest book "The Sandcastle Girls," on April 17; award-winning science writer Mary Roach, author of "Stiff," "Bonk" and her new book "Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal," on April 30; and National Book Award finalist Kent Haruf, who will introduce his new book "Benediction," on May 15.
Each author will speak about his or her literary works during a talk in Library Hall starting at 6:30 p.m. Each talk will be followed by a Q-and-A and an opportunity to have authors sign copies of their books. Tobacco cessation kits available in Steamboat
The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is offering a free QuitKits and information about how to quit smoking or using smokeless tobacco.
The kits are available in the lobby of the Steamboat VNA office at 940 Central Park Drive, Suite 101. The Colorado QuitLine is available at 800-QUIT-NOW.
Yampa Valley Youth Chorus session slated for March
The Yampa Valley Youth Chorus begins its next seven-week session at 4 p.m. March 18 in the Soda Creek Elementary School music room.

County issues instructions for snowplow drivers
The Routt County Road and Bridge Department is asking snowplow drivers to plow snow to the sides of a street and that plowing snow across a street is unsafe and, in some cases, illegal.

Medical services offered in Hayden community building
The Solandt Memorial Hospital aims to continually pay tribute to the memory of pioneer physician John Solandt by maintaining, preserving and using the community building in Hayden for health and well-being services that provide for the needs of the community.

Local groups reach out to returning service members
The Routt County Veterans Affairs, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4264 and American Legion Post 44 in Steamboat would like to meet and greet local sons and daughters returning from military service.

MS fundraiser Sunday at Steamboat Ski Area
Vertical Express for Can Do MS is Sunday at Steamboat Ski Area. To participate in the fundraiser — which benefits Can Do MS, a national nonprofit based in Edwards that helps families living with multiple sclerosis — skiers and snowboarders are asked to raise a minimum of $250.
Those who raise $500 will receive a free lift ticket to access the day's activities, which include a giant slalom race and other on-snow events as well as a party.
