Kayla Guettich, a 17-year-old senior at Steamboat Springs High School, was named the Optimist

Club’s Teen of the Month for September, according to a news release.

Guettich, who holds a 3.45 GPA, volunteers her time for a number of organizations, including It Takes Courage, Partners in Routt County, Steamboat Springs Teen Council and Young Life, among others.

She enjoys skiing, soccer, hiking, biking, rafting, painting, drawing, writing and acting.

In the future, Guettich hopes to attend the University of Oregon and major in psychology. She also wants to start a group called GRIP, which stands for girls realizing individual potential.

Guettich’s advice to other students is that everyone can make a difference in the world.

2,900 visitors expected to be in town Saturday

About 2,900 visitors are expected to be in town Saturday, according to the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association’s lodging barometer.

The figure represents 18 percent capacity at area lodging properties, with downtown showing the highest occupancy at 39 percent. On the mountain, hotels are expected to be 8 percent full and condos are forecast to be 20 percent full.

During the same weekend last year, 2,600 visitors were expected to arrive, but 3,000 actually spent the night in Steamboat on the corresponding Saturday, according to the report.

Lodging occupancy is forecast to dip Wednesday, when 2,200 visitors are expected to be in town.

The Chamber’s lodging barometer is based on survey data from local lodging properties. Its primary function is to help businesses determine staffing levels during the winter and summer tourism seasons. Actual lodging occupancy levels tend to increase from the forecast levels as a result of last-minute bookings.
