Middle schoolers selected for D.C. leadership forum
Steamboat Springs Middle School students Allison Casey and Cole Gibbs recently were accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum. Casey and Gibbs will join a select group of students in Washington, D.C., from June 28 to July 3 to study leadership and explore some of the United States' most prominent monuments and institutions, according to a news release.
The forum will take students to historic U.S. landmarks such as Capitol Hill and Gettysburg to examine the characteristics of American leadership during times of national challenge and prosperity. Forum delegates also will participate in small group discussions and exercises to experience how successful leaders develop strategies, make decisions, build consensus and foster change, according to the release.
Casey and Gibbs were chosen for the forum based on their academic achievements, civic involvement and leadership potential. They were nominated by Soda Creek Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Cindy Gantick.
The duo is trying to raise $5,000 for their trip. Donations can be made in their names to Wells Fargo Bank, P.O. Box 77488, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477. Donations also can be dropped off at Excel Gymnastics, 1955 Bridge Lane, Suite 1500, in Steamboat. For more information, call Annabelle Casey at 819-8512 or Mike Smith at 291-9181.
