Steamboat briefs: Food safety basics training retail course is Wednesday

A food safety basics training course for retail food establishment employees in Routt County is from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Steamboat Springs Community Center, 1605 Lincoln Ave.
The class will cover risk factors associated with foodborne illness, personal hygiene and hand washing requirements, hazardous foods, proper labeling, cross-contamination, time and temperature control requirements, and cleaning and sanitization techniques.

Winter Sports Club swap sale begins at 7 p.m. Friday
The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's annual Ski and Sport Swap begins at 7 p.m. Friday with an early-bird entrance fee of $5 and continues from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday with free admission. Green Building Tour is Sunday in North Routt
The Yampa Valley Sustainability Council hosts its Green Building Tour from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The tour will visit three North Routt homes that are less than 2,500 square feet and highlight a variety of sustainable features. Steamboat attendees should meet at 11:30 a.m. at Stock Bridge Transit Center to take a shuttle. North Routt attendees should meet at noon at the North Routt Community Charter School. The cost is $10 for students, $15 for adults or $20 for two adults, and registration is required at http://www.tinyurl.com/paym9ej.
Farm Service Agency ballots now out for 2013 election
The 2013 USDA Farm Service Agency County Committee Elections began Monday with the mailing of ballots to eligible voters.
To be an eligible voter, farmers and ranchers must participate or cooperate in an FSA program, according to a news release. Eligible voters who do not receive ballots in the coming week can obtain ballots from their local USDA Service Center.
"The role and input of our county committee members is more vital than ever at a time when our country faces important choices regarding the funding and operation of our government," Administrator Juan M. Garcia said in the release.
The deadline to return the ballots to local FSA offices is Dec. 2. Newly elected committee members and their alternates will take office Jan. 1.
Veterans Day programs in Hayden are on Monday
The Hayden School District will host a variety of Veterans Day programs Monday beginning with a PowerPoint presentation at 11 a.m. at Hayden High School, 495 W. Jefferson Ave., which will focus on Sept. 11 as well as Hayden-area veterans who are currently serving or are newly enlisted members of the military. In the evening, the district will host the Red, White & Blue Unstoppable You program for the Hayden community. A dinner is at 5:30 p.m. in the high school's front foyer and is followed by a presentation from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. All students who attend with their parents or guardians will receive an assignment voucher and be entered to win an iPad. All of the programs are free.
