Steamboat briefs: Emily L. Birch is awarded scholarship for philosophy

Emily L. Birch, daughter of Daniel and Susan Birch, of Steamboat Springs, was named the recipient of The Robert Leet Patterson Prize Scholarship in Philosophy at Hamilton College's annual Class and Charter Day on Monday, according to a news release.
The scholarships are awarded to sophomores and juniors who have excelled in the study of philosophy. Birch, a 2010 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, is a junior at Hamilton College and is majoring in philosophy and physics, according to the release.
Volunteers are needed for Community Cleanup Day
Volunteers are needed for the Community Cleanup Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Steamboat Springs. Volunteers should dress for the elements, wear comfortable boots and bring yard gloves, sunscreen and water. Are volunteers are welcome to get free coffee and pastries at 8 a.m. on the Routt County Courthouse lawn as well as attend a barbecue and awards ceremony from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Howelsen Beach.
