Steamboat briefs: CR 129 closed to through traffic in far North Routt

— Routt County Road 129 is closed to commercial and through traffic from Columbine in North Routt to 3 Forks Ranch, about 10.2 miles, effective immediately. The closure is a result of spring thaw and impassable road conditions. Emergency services, if available, will be slow and expensive, according to a news release from the Routt County Road and Bridge Department. Call 879-0831.

Jefferson-Jackson dinner tonight for Democrats

The Routt County Democra­tic Party's annual Jefferson Jack­son Potluck Dinner Fundraiser is at 5:30 p.m. today at the Steam­boat Springs Community Cen­ter. Local speakers will be County Commissioner Diane Mitsch-Bush, Sheriff Gary Wall and coroner candidate Dar­rel Levingston. U.S. Rep. John Salazar will be the keynote speaker. The evening includes a live auction, with auctioneer County Commissioner Doug Monger, door prizes and the Routt County Democrats volunteer of the year award. Bring a potluck dish to share. The event is $25 for adults, $15 for students and free for those ages 18 and younger.

Schmidt named director of county's Council on Aging

Laura Schmidt is the new executive director at Routt County Council on Aging.

Before coming to to the agency, Schmidt worked for the Health­care Foundation for the Yampa Valley, writing grants and managing public relations for the organization. She replaces Shelley Orrell, who retired.

"I wasn't even looking for a job when Routt County Council on Aging posted their ad for executive director," Schmidt said, "but the mission of RCCOA is so important, and it means so much to me personally, that I felt compelled to apply."

Routt County Council on Aging is a nonprofit agency whose mission is to ascertain the needs of the senior citizens in Routt County and to make every effort to meet those needs with appropriate action.
