Grand Futures reminds readers not to drink, drive

Grand Futures of Routt County is joining with highway safety partners and law enforcement organizations across the country this December to remind people that during the holidays and throughout the year, drinking alcohol and driving do not mix and that “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.”

Grand Futures is encouraging area residents to take a few simple steps to ensure their celebrations don’t end in tragedy.

■ Plan ahead; be sure to designate a sober driver before the festivities begin.

■ If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving. Even one drink too many increases the risk of a crash while driving a motor vehicle. If you are impaired, find another way home. Use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member or use public transportation.

■ Be responsible. If someone you know is drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. Your actions may save someone’s life, and inaction could cost a life.

Grand Futures will feature free Impaired Driving Prevention flyers that employers can post at their place of work. Also available for free download is the R-U-Buzzed BAC Calculator App for iPhone and Android. Please visit http://www.grandfutures.org/rubuzzed to download these free items.

Fiesta for the Future days are Wednesday, Thursday

Christmas bird count is scheduled for Saturday

On Saturday, volunteers will gather at 8 a.m. at the Steamboat Springs Community Center to travel to several nearby defined count zones to participate in this annual National Audubon Society Citizen Science event. Each zone will have an experienced birder as leader and anyone interested in learning more about winter birds in the Steamboat area is invited to participate in this free event.

Organized by the Yampa Valley Birding Club and Yampatika, Steamboat Springs’ Christmas bird count will be one of 50 similar counts in Colorado. The decades of data from Christmas bird counts has helped identify birds in need of conservation action.

It’s also possible to participate in the count by being a feeder watcher. To obtain guidelines for reporting birds seen at your bird feeder, email count organizers at birdsNboat@com

cast.net. There also will be a group on skis counting birds at Steamboat Ski Area. To join the skiing group, call Yampatika at 970-871-9151.

Salvation Army seeking volunteer bell ringers

To volunteer, call Salvation Army bell ringer coordinator Susan Phillips at 970-846-9958 or email steamboatbellringers@gmail.com.
