Steamboat Briefs: BLM announces days when it will waive some land fees

The Bureau of Land Management, in conjunction with other agencies within the Department of the Interior, will waive recreation-related fees for visitors Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14 and 15, Sept. 25 (National Public Lands Day) and Nov. 11 (Veterans Day) on many of the public lands managed by the BLM, including areas within the National Landscape Conservation System, according to a BLM news release.
Site standard amenity and individual day-use fees at BLM recreation sites and areas will be waived for the day, according to the release. Other fees, such as overnight camping, cabin rentals, and group day use, will remain.

Free birth control is available with an appointment through the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association's Family Planning Program, including IUDs, Nuvaring and Implanon. VA issues warning about a potential phone scam
The Department of Veterans Affairs is warning veterans not to disclose personal information over the phone to callers claiming to update, confirm or verify VA-related information, according to a news release. According to the VA, the fraudulent callers are asking for credit card numbers, bank routing numbers and other personal and financial information. A recent call included the caller claiming to be a VA employee and stating that the veteran's medical card has expired.

Horizons seeks volunteers to serve as local mentors
Horizons Specialized Services seeks volunteers to serve as mentors to individuals with developmental disabilities in Moffat and Routt counties. Volunteers spend at least three hours a month with Horizons clients. Activities can include hiking, biking, bowling, swimming, fishing, walks, etc. The group needs volunteers for the Steamboat Marathon, swimming and boating programs.
