Steamboat Briefs: Bilingual volunteers are needed for new story-time

— Volunteers are needed for Bilingual Preschool Story-time, coming soon to the Bud Werner Library. Organizers are seeking enthusiastic, creative, and compassionate volunteers that are fluent in both English and Spanish, great with children, available one Monday morning per month, and comfortable reading and speaking in front of a large group of kids, parents and caregivers. Interested volunteers should attend the Bilingual Story-time Training at 6 p.m. March 2 in the Children’s Story-time Room. BLM puts 2 environmental assessments up for review

The Bureau of Land Man­agement is releasing for public review two environmental assessments for parcels proposed for leasing in Northwest Colorado in its Aug. 11 competitive oil and gas lease sale, according to a news release.

Five parcels totaling about 8,670 acres are proposed in Rio Blanco County. They include 8,149 acres of federal land and 521 acres of split-estate land with federal minerals. The assessment can be reviewed at http://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/fo/wrfo.html or at the White River Field Office in Meeker during regular business hours. Comments must to be received by March 21.



Six parcels totaling about 2,943 acres in the Kremmling Field Office are also proposed for leasing in the August lease sale. They include four split-estate parcels with federal minerals totaling 2,783 acres in Grand County. In addition, two parcels totaling 160 acres are proposed in Jackson County, with about 120 acres being BLM lands with federal minerals and about 40 acres being split estate with federal minerals. This environmental assessment can be reviewed at http://www.blm.gov/co/kfo or at the Kremmling Field Office during regular business hours. Comments must received by March 24.

Veterans can find out which services and benefits they are eligible for through the Routt County Veterans Affairs Office. The office is at 425 Anglers Drive, in Sundance Plaza. Tread of Pioneers Museum seeks front desk volunteers

The Tread of Pioneers Museum is seeking volunteers. The Steamboat Springs museum needs front desk volunteers to work three-hour shifts. Duties include greeting visitors, answering phones and collecting admissions and gift shop sales. Friday and Saturday afternoon shifts are especially needed. Library begins children’s oral storytelling workshop

Bud Werner Memorial Library invites children 9 and older to join The Enchanters Junior Storytelling Troupe and learn to tell folktales and stories in the oral tradition. Attendees will play improvisation games, practice using voice, gestures and audience participation, and prepare to tell stories for a live audience. City Council meetings to be broadcast live on TV6

TV6 on Comcast service now provides live video and audio of every Steamboat Springs City Council meeting. The Tuesday meetings will be rebroadcast on TV6 at 5 p.m. Thursdays and at 8 a.m. Saturdays. Call Mike Schmidt at 970-871-8220 with any questions.

African dance and drum sessions ongoing in winter

The winter session of Afr­ican dance with the Steamboat Springs African Dance & Drum Ensemble has begun. Mixed-level classes with live drummers are at 6 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at the Depot Art Center. Nicole Idzahl teaches on Tuesday nights and Jennifer Lowe teaches on Thursday nights, through May 5. Drop-ins are welcome and there are also session-long registration and punch cards available.
