Steamboat briefs: 4-H open house is Feb. 9

Routt County 4-H is hosting a 4-H open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. The event is free and open to the public. All families with children ages 8 to 18 are encouraged to come learn about 4-H.

The 4-H program is a national youth organization that focuses on providing a safe environment for youths to develop life skills including leadership, communication, responsibility and community service. Routt County has about 265 youths enrolled in more than 50 project areas and is supported by the efforts of 65 volunteer adult leaders.

Christian Heritage School 2nd-quarter honor roll

Seventh-grader Paige Evins was named to the honor roll for earning A’s and B’s. High school students named to the honor roll for earning GPAs between 3.0 and 3.49 are: ninth-graders David Kissane and AnaMaria Vazquez; 10th-graders Stephen Hathaway and Hannah Mihaich; 11th-grader Eric Spahr; and 12th-graders Ryan Hall and David Robey.

Students named to the high honor roll for earning all A’s are: eighth-graders Lauren Anderson and Andrea Houston.



High school students named to the high honor roll for GPAs of 3.5 and higher are: ninth-grader Mackenzie Holmberg; 10th­-graders Nora Corser, Shealie Jenkins, Abby Kissane, Jay Lanning and Jane Robey; 11th­-graders Emily Heiner, Melodie Houston, Matthew Jones and Aimee Lotz; and 12th-graders Leah Berdine and Kirsten Williams.

Steamboat native named to Iowa college dean’s list

Aimee Tia Jones, of Steam­boat Springs, was named to the fall 2010 dean’s list at the University of Iowa. To make the dean’s list, students must earn a 3.5 GPA while taking at least 12 credit hours in the college of liberal arts and sciences.

VNA receives $55,000 for health coverage education

The Department of Health Care Policy and Financing announced Thursday that $421,000 from a federal grant was awarded to 10 statewide community organizations to educate families about public health insurance, to inform and aid children and families in their community with health coverage options, and to assist with re-enrollment, according to a news release. The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association was among the recipients.

The department received a five-year, $42 million grant from Health Resources and Services Admin­istration. The Maxi­miz­ing Outreach, Retention and Enroll­ment project, provided funding for the community grants. The VNA received $54,694.
