Steamboat boys lacrosse improves to 13-1 after win

Luke Graham

— It seems to be a consistent phrase in Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse coach Bob Hiester's vocabulary.

"It's as complete a game as we've played," Hiester said after Steamboat beat Valor Christian, 12-4, on Saturday.

The mark improves Steamboat to 13-1 overall and 9-0 in the Mountain Conference. The win also makes Steamboat 4-1 against Front Range opponents.

Had Rock Canyon not scored with 14 seconds left in regulation to tie a game with Steamboat earlier this season, the Sailors would be undefeated.

"We just went right to work," Hiester said. "We maintained our intensity through four quarters."

Steamboat overcame its traditional slow start and had all but decided the game in the first two quarters.

The Sailors led, 3-1, after one quarter and were up, 9-3, at halftime.

John Wharton led the way with four goals. Wilber Ranieri had three goals, and Jake Miller had two while Tyler Scott, Kai Rogers and Christian Ramirez each had one.

Steamboat also had nine assists.

"We just jumped up on them," Hiester said. "They didn't have any idea what to expect."

Steamboat now will get a better look at just where it stands among the state elite. The team will travel to No. 5 Columbine on Wednesday for a scrimmage.

"I'm just excited to see how we do against them," Hiester said.
