Steamboat boys hoops teams loses to Ponderosa 69-54

The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team slipped to 1-1 on the season with a loss Saturday against Ponderosa, 69-54, at a tournament in Roaring Fork, but the game left the Sailors convinced better nights could await this season.

“I’m proud of the way we played,” coach Michael Vandahl said. “Ponderosa’s right outside the top 10 in Class 4A, so we’re right there.”

Vandahl said the game only got out of hand in the waning moments when the Sailors turned to fouls to try and make up what was just a three-point deficit with three minutes remaining.

Ponderosa proved too physical for the Sailors, beating Steamboat on the offensive and defensive boards and taking advantage of a Steamboat squad slowed by fouls.

Mac Riniker and Aiden Knaus each scored 15 points to lead the Sailors.

“I thought our gameplan was better. We were right there with them,” Vandahl said. “We can hang with a lot of teams in the state, but we have to get the little things taken care of.”
